Technology As A Replacement For The Human Touch – An Unworkable Idea

For a long time, employers believe that employees work only for money. However, the Mayo experiment proved that employees work for recognition, self respect and a feeling of competence as well. Those employees who were given special tasks and special responsibilities worked harder because they felt they were being valued higher by their employer. The fact that they did not enjoy any pay hike did not deter them from improving their performance.

In the same way, many persons are of the opinion that having many friends on social networking web site is the best way of having a satisfactory social life. To measure life on the basis of numbers and quantity alone does not make sense. One must focus on quality as well. Will an individual prefer staying in touch with friends and family members through web cameras and videoconferencing throughout his or her life? Certainly not. Even the most technology friendly person will baulk at such an idea.

In such a scenario, it is important to understand the limitations of technology. When we don’t have any choice, we will prefer staying in touch with our near and dear ones with the help of technology as opposed to staying out of contact. However, if people have a choice between personal interaction or interaction through technological media, they will always prefer the former.

You may feel that chatting with your family on the computer is no different than chatting in person. However, the truth is that technology is, at best, a poor substitute for the human brain. Hence, don’t expect technology to enable you to skip personal interactions and other traditional modes of interaction altogether.

Using the Internet to Save the Environment

People working on a computer all day for business or pleasure are helping the environment. Even those who are paying their bills and doing their shopping online are reducing the amount of paper used for these purposes.

Banks, mortgage companies, and utility companies do their part in going green, by electronically sending customers their bills, receipts, and statements. Because these bills are due on a monthly basis, in one year companies and their clients save an enormous amount of trees, that helps to save the environment.

Reducing toxins by saving trees is a big step in the process of saving the Earth’s natural resources, and paying bills and online shopping are just two ways to do it. There is also a way to save the environment and your relationship with long distance friends and relatives.

Even social networking sites on the Internet are contributing to the preservation of resources that will make our planet last longer. By keeping in touch with friends and family from far away in chat rooms and on social networking sites, they are using less paper, and keeping in touch in a fun and personal way.

There is so much beauty and wonderment in the world. The technological advancements of Internet usage, gives people the precious time they need to enjoy it. People have extra time to go out and work in the garden, to plant flowers or shrubs, or help with a neighborhood cleanup.

The next time you pay your bills online or do your grocery-shopping, think about how the Internet enables people to manage their lives, keep in touch with family and friends, and do some good for the environment.
