How do I Find Hot Spots in my City

If you’ve gone to the world of wireless, you probably hate the times when you can’t find your wireless internet connection, especially if you’re new to a city. It can be frustrating to find places to go where you have access to the Internet.

Hot Spots are not the latest trendy nightclub, although they could be. For these purposes, a Hot Spot refers to a place or access point that your mobile devices, like phones and ipods, can connect to the Internet wirelessly. Many cities have gone to creating entire blocks of their city where the Internet is accessible via wireless connections.

Where to find hot spots:

  • Much like that cup of coffee you crave every morning, coffee shops are a great place to find hot spots or wireless internet connections. As people start their days, hooking up to the Internet on the way to a busy day is how many of them get their day started.
  • National parks and city parks – Any rule of thumb about internet connectivity being available is… if there are lots of people around there is probably going to be wireless internet connections. Take a walk around your city park sometime and see if you don’t see signs advertising the availability of the Internet. Even national parks and campgrounds have gotten on board to provide hot spots to their visitors.
  • McDonald’s – Although the sign doesn’t always suggest that wireless internet is available, it is. Much like the cup of coffee scenario, McDonald’s and other fast-food restaurants have been providing hot spots to their customers for years.

As technology continues to expand and the use of wireless internet becomes more prevalent, especially in major metropolitan areas, more internet connections will become available. If you live in a smaller town and are dying for the Internet, try the airport, the hospital or the bowling alley.
